you arrived at les fosses noires, zad, notre dame des landes. it was falling night. on the way it was hard cycling. the luggage trailer got a flat. you met Nat. Nat welcomed you and showed you the place. you were grateful. for a while you were unsure if you would arrive. confusing maps and tracks. it got too dark to ride off the road. the roads had fast traffic. you lost a grey notebook. if it fell out of your pocket. you went back to the bike hire to see if you had left it. you crossed a march for palestine. a flatbed truck with a sound system where a person could stand, calling to the march. flags. the bicycle and trailer were heavy. you were distracted by the physical process of riding, navigating, being alone. Nat showed you a big kitchen with a friendly table. from the
kitchen through a work area. lumps of equipment under tarps. if thie was a chicken shed – spattered everywhere – walls, floor, piles of stuff. up a steep timber stair to under the roof of the barn. full of beds one by another. an electric light. signs of out of use. droppings of rodents or bats. some clean folded sheets. compost toilet on the ground level. outside: where to put the shit and sawdust: a wooden bin full to the top. another low. where the sawdust is. caravan with shower. where you can't go: beyond the edge of the hard standing in either direction onto the neighbouring plots. getting settled. putting a sheet on a bed. getting gas to the cooker. boiling water. finding a pot. heating the food you brought for lunch. cleaning the cooker. washing up. lying down in your sleeping bag with layers. reading pamplets

front – your upper legs and trunk. your face and neck. being warmed, irradiated. jackdaws around the tower and lower buildings in the square. their cries short, compressed, squeaky, as escaping air. when you get back, fix the punctured trailer tube. or if you were given a spare, just change it. you bought bread. being alone. being separated. trying to accomplish all actions alone. jackdaw cries in clusters. a lone person is quite vulnerable, with fresh severances: think of cutting those blocks of sleepers as fe bases for sam's shelves – the fresh red cuts the colour of beefsteak fungus, with their grain. if a person is presenting points of contact, site of attachment, or staying aloof, stumm. riding from les fosses noires toward vigneux, v you began to see improvised vernacular and experimental structures and clusters of structures. if these inhabitants, or some of them,
are those whose futures are uncertain / undermined now the airport plan is shelved, and the status of informal buildings is unclear. that the mayors of vigneux and a nearby commune have been threatening and delaying. to the right, sliding above the hedges and clumps of foliage, the lighthouse of N.D. Des Landes appeared – tall and decisive, like a memory – a ghost and re-instigation of the iconic towers from the Narita airport protest, with its loudspeakers and it fluttering beating flags on poles lashed horizontally to the structure. it was cold in the night. the barn does not gather warmth. the kitchen shows the histories of people with things to do. no time for cleaning. the cupboards are stuck with stickers from hundreds of actions, movements, organisations, campaigns.
'la zad c'est partout'. the thickness of these activities is accumulated, as dirt also accumulates, underwriting a certain attention, certain urgencies. you can imagine that table surrounded by people eating together, on the day before an action – the energies and warmth of those gatherings from all over. then sleeping in the loft on the grid of beds, which forms almost a single padded surface – sleeping, dreaming. gett ing up. the dorm is empty except for you. the kitchen sink doesn't drain ther is warm water. a bottle with gas. plans to insulate. in la bulle noire next door they make beer. tomorrow monday there will be communal meal. somebody is come to make bread. a cloud went in front of the sun. a small electric vehicle glides past. citroën ami. then petrol vans. jackdaws rising

as in other cases, the top of a structure like this is sonically exposed and distant. sounds seek the hug the ground; anti-monumental. the tower answers particular urgencies, with Radio Klaxone broad-
casting messages to driver[s] over FM, and calls to defend the zone when under threat. thinking of the Narita resistance, with its songs, flags and fortresses. its rhythms of sticking [striking?] together in a tight group.
